The Red Room Newsletter: December 17, 2018 – January 11, 2019

The last week before Winter Break will be spent exploring holiday traditions from around the world, a visit from Ms. Casey, and having a gift exchange. When we come back from Winter Break our focus will be getting back into our school day routine, snowmen, and ice.
Kinderfarm will be closed from Monday, December 24 – Friday, January 4. Classes resume Monday, January 7.
Please note that the January 2019 tuition and transportation fees are due on December 25. Fees remaining unpaid after January 1, 2019 will be subject to a ten-dollar late fee. Classes are not in session again until January 7 so please plan to make your payment before Winter Break or mail it before January 1. In advance, thank you for your cooperation.
Please be sure to check the Notes and Reminders section of the Kinderfarm website to review the Inclement Weather Policy. We do cancel classes if the Iowa City School District cancels their classes but our other policies concerning late starts and early dismissals are different from the school district.
Book orders will be coming home January 7 and 8. Orders will be due by Wednesday, January 16.
Kinderfarm will be closed on Monday, January 21 in observance of the Martin Luther King holiday.
Please note that Share Days are January 18 and 24. Children that attend full day may bring an item to share with their morning class and an item to share with their afternoon class.
MONDAY – Los Posadas is a traditional Mexican celebration that re-enacts Joseph’s search for a room at the inn. The Red Roomers will examine this tradition in addition to making a paper lantern and making a piñata that they will break on Friday.
TUESDAY – Ms. Casey will be our guest this morning. Be sure to ask your child what her book theme was today.
Dishes made with peanuts are plentiful during Kwanzaa season. This afternoon we will try our hand at making homemade peanut butter.
WEDNESDAY – Christmas fairs in Italy feature fireworks and bonfires along with holiday music. After finding Italy on the map the children will make their own fireworks on paper. Holiday songs will round out our time together.
THURSDAY – We will begin our day reading the book Mr Willowby’s Christmas Tree. A Christmas tree sequencing activity will follow. Time permitting, we will play a game of Christmas Tree Bingo.
FRIDAY – Our final day before Winter Break will be spent breaking the piñata we made on Monday, playing with playdough, and playing some holiday games.
JANUARY 7 – 11
MONDAY – Our class creativity is sure to shine as we make a free-form snowman out of shaving cream. A game of Snowflake Bingo will end our time together.
TUESDAY – We will begin our time together reading the book The Mitten. After reading the story the children will cut out a paper mitten and paint it using something rather unique. Be sure to ask your child what they used. Time permitting, we will head out to the pond for a little exploration and ice skating.
WEDNESDAY – We will be making a rather unique snowman today. Ask your child if they can remember what we used to make them. (Hint: they are used to mash potatoes).
THURSDAY – Counting skills will be put to the test today as the children glue buttons on a paper snowman that correspond with the number on the snowman’s hat. The children will also be working on their size discrimination skills as they make snack. Be sure to ask your child what we made.
FRIDAY – Red Roomers will be practicing their fine motor skills and observation skills as they drop colored salt water onto a block of ice. What happened? Ask your child.
After reading The Biggest Snowball Ever the children will be making a snowball of their own to eat for snack this afternoon. These snowballs will not be your average snowballs. Ask your child to tell you about them.
Mrs. Norman
